Joe Alfred Adamcik was born on June 28, 1930, in Taylor, Texas. He received his M.A. in 1954 in Chemistry from the University of Texas and his Ph.D. in 1957 in Organic Chemistry from the University of Illinois. In September of 1957, Adamcik began as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Texas Technological College. He was promoted to the rank of associate professor in 1961.
