Abstract

Description

Slide of the Will Rogers Statue wrapped in yellow crepe paper. This image appears on the back cover of the Summer 1991 issue of Vistas magazine. The accompanying caption states "The Persian Gulf War claimed the life of at least one recently enrolled Texas Tech student. U.S. Army Pfc. Corey Winkle, 21, a former theatre arts student of Lubbock, died Feb. 25 in Saudi Arabia. As reservists in the military, more than 90 Texas Tech students and 12 health sciences center employees were deployed for Operation Desert Storm. Members of the Saddle Tramps, a Texas Tech spirit organization, wrapped the familiar campus statue of Will Rogers and his horse Soapsuds in yellow, rather than the usual red, streamers to honor American troops serving in the war. The statue, "Riding into the Sunset," was created in 1950 by Electra Waggoner Biggs, an artist of Texas and New York. (Photo by Artie Limmer)"
