dc.description"The Catalyst" is comprised of 12 pages of student written articles, satires and political statements. This issue covered topics such as councilman William Ray Blackwell's failure to pay an auto repair bill; the Civil Liberties Union's defense of jailed May Day protesters; bike thefts by a member of the Tech football team and his brother and their avoidance of charges due to help from District Attorney Blair Cherry and coach Jim Carlen; basic rules for students legal protection against the police; the Tasady tribe's discovery; environmental issues; segregations of whites and blacks on campus and the initiation of a Black Studies course; an interview with student James Young on tensions between blacks and whites; competition between KSEL and KEND radio stations; a complaint filed for discrimination against James G. Marshall; and an editorial by Roger Settler on the exclusion of Indians in America. There is also a small ad for the establishment of Pi Lambda Phi at Texas Tech. This is the summer 1971 issue and sold for 25 cents.
