"The Catalyst" is comprised of 8 pages of student written articles, editorials, satires and political statements. This issue covered topics such the arrival and criticism of new football coach Jim Carlen; Senator Ralph W. Yarborough's visit to campus; Lloyd Bentsen's visit to Lubbock; criticism of Charlie Guy; Students for a Democratic Society protests; the Vietnam War Moratorium; marijuana usage; anti-war GI-cilivian demonstrations; a Vietnam IQ test; the conviction of Richard Chase for refusing to participate in "Operation Garden Plot"; the second observance of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday; pollution; and a list of resolutions by the Catalyst staff. The issue is dated January 13-27, 1970, and sold for 15 cents.
