A doctoral graduate in medicine from Texas Tech University School of Medicine in 1982, Harris became an astronaut with NASA in 1991. He was the first African American to walk in space in 1995. Harris was also the first African American to be appointed to the Texas Tech University Board of Regents, serving from 1993-1999.en_US
