The Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy was founded in 1914 in El Paso, Texas. Its name was changed to Texas Western College in the 1950s and was noted for being the first southern college to integrate its intercollegiate athletic teams. In 1967, it became the University of Texas at El Paso, also commonly known as UTEP or UT at El Paso.
