dc.description | Image of damage done to a Lubbock fire station during the May 11, 1970 tornado. The accompanying press release states: "THE LUBBOCK CENTRAL FIRE STATION -- Winds seek the weakest link in a building. When that link fails, there follows a succession of failures, causing progressive destruction of the building. Overhead doors provided the wink link in construction. When they failed, air rushed in. Having no place to go, it pushed out the walls. This phenomenon is often described to the public as 'suction' but the engineers say there is little evidence of any but natural wind forces. The walls are blown outward by the rush of air into the building. (Tech Photo)" | en_US |
