He was associated with the Matador Land and Cattle Company, a Scottish-owned company that acquired the Matador Ranch located in Motley, Cottle, Floyd, and Dickens counties of Texas. MacKay had the longest tenure in the company's Dundee, Scotland, office. He served as Secretary, Director, and Chairman of the Board from 1882-1936.
