The portrait digitized here is that of Kenneth Wallace, one of three Lubbock Estacado High School recruits in February of 1970. Wallace is cited as the first African American football player to graduate from Texas Tech University. Awarded a full football scholarship as a defensive back, Wallace received his bachelor's degree in Physical Education on May 11, 1974, then was hired by the university as an assistant coach for the fall. He earned his master's degree in Physical Education from the university on December 20, 1979, and went on to have a distinguished career as a football coach at Dunbar-Struggs High School then became principal of Estacado High School.1 contact sheet: b&w : 8 x 10 in.The images in this collection are for study purposes, teaching, classroom projection and research only.
