Undated photograph of Eunice Joiner Gates which is taped to her april 20, 1956, personal and professional data bank form.
Eunice Joiner Gates was born on October 12, 1898, in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil. She received her M.A. in English in 1923 from Southwestern University, a M.A. in Spanish in 1927 from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in Romance Languages in 1933 from the University of Pennsylvania. She, with her husband, William Bryan Gates, were among the first faculty members at Texas Technological College when the college first opened in 1925. He served as professor of English and was Dean of the Graduate School while she taught in the Department of Foreign Languages. Both professors retired in 1963.
