Douglas William Alden was born on September 11, 1912, in Washington, D. C. He received his Ph.D. from Brown University in 1938 and became an Instructor of French at Texas Technological College in 1938. He became an assistant professor in 1942 and left 1945 to accept a teaching position at Princeton.
