William Henry Abbitt was born on January 30, 1894 in Richmond, Virginia. He received his Ph.D. in 1926 from the University of Chicago. In 1926, Abbitt accepted a teaching position in the Department of Physics at Texas Technological College. After conflicts with head of the department, the position was terminated for Abbitt in 1941, despite his appeals to the American Association of University Professors for help.
