Gary Andrew Ahrens was born on June 3, 1948, in Boone, Iowa. He received his B.A. in 1970 in English, Language and Literature from the University of Chicago and his J.D. in Law from the University of Virginia in 1973. He was offered an assistant professor position at the Texas Tech University School of Law in 1979. He resigned his position in 1982.
