Thor Jensen Beck was born on July 11, 1882 in Denmark. Beck, who held a Ph.D. from Columbia University, was offered the position of head of the French and German Department at Texas Technological College in 1927. He was let go of his position in 1932 when the Board of Directors voted to merge the foreign languages departments. Beck returned as a temporary instructor in 1946.
