Description
This slide is of a pictograph in Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site, located northeast of El Paso, Texas. The slide casing has been labelled by Dr. Robert G. Campbell with the following information: Trip # 334, United States, XXIII, F1, Hueco Tanks St. Pk., Sacramento Upland Site #9, March 1984.
The pictograph appears in the publication “Rock Paintings at Hueco Tanks State Historic Site” by Dr. Kay Sutherland, Texas Parks and Wildlife, 2006, on page 18 with the caption “White horned dancer with mask-type face and goggle eyes. The horned dancer is specific to the Jornada Mogollon. (Horned masks are not found in pre-Columbian Meso-america.) The horns are an indication of the combination of hunting symbolism with Mesoamerican-derived masks.”
