Abstract

Description

Gertrude Cross Suppe was an ethno hymnologist. Since 1976, she was actively involved in the identification, transcription, translation, liturgical use, and promotion of Hispanic hymns. She participated in workshops and conferences in the United States, Canada, and abroad. She also worked with many denominational commissions and task forces. In 1996, she retired as Secretary to the Editor and Consultant to the Ecumenical Spanish Hymnal Committee.
The Gertrude C. Suppe Hispanic Church Music Collection consists of material relating to Gertrude C. Suppe and vernacular Hispanic church music, both Catholic and Protestant. The languages were largely Spanish, Portugese, and Catalan with some materials in English. The collection contains many "cancioneros", which are small song books used in worship. Their dates range from 1972-1999. Also included are documents, correspondence, photographs, and recordings concerning composers, workshops, conferences, and the editing of Hispanic hymnals in which Gertrude C. Suppe took part.
