Ex-Red Raider Plays --Against Tech eltaitelu Beitafeen diaffil By Bill Parker Well, there is an end to any tread, and tonight the 1943 Texas Tech Red Raiders will play their final home football game of the current season. They will play one more game after tonight, that will be their game at Dallas against the Southern Methodist Mustangs on • Saturday, November 20th. The Raiders have not had a great winning year but nobody expected them to win a lot of their games, You can't take 16 and 17-year old boys who are just fresh out of high school and play major league football. The youngsters composing the Texas Tech team really put out and tried to win their games but their real fault was that they made too many mistakes. All football players go through the old mistake period but they are usually on the freshmen team instead of the varsity like the youngsters of the Red Raiders this season. Some of the Raiders like Hubert Bechtel, left end; Bob Brewer at right halfback, Buster Melton in the fullback slot, and Thomas Pirtle, right guard; played a lot of good ball for the Raiders and made their mistakes but they will not make those mistakes of plays next year. They now have had the one-year of experience that is so vital to the future. That's why colleges have freshmen football teams. So that in a year they can learn throughly how to avoid the mistakes they are making this year on the offense and the defense. I don't think that many Lubbock football fans were disappointed in the Red Raiders but they realized that the 1943 Raiders were just kids from small high schools where they don't get too much coaching. So tonight the Red Raiders will walk-out on the field in their farewell home game for the 1943 season. I have seen all their home games and I have traveled with them on the road to other games and I along with 25,000 other fans saw the Red Raiders play the best game of the season against the Texas A. and M. Aggies which the Tech team lost 13 to 0. Those of the current team who don't go into the se ry and return to Tech's 1944 ice, football team will be reliable players, simply because they have a year of football schooling which they needed very badly. This husky youngster, James Reed, who is a 196-pounds of tackle or guard, will play against the team tonight that he once played with. Reed played the regular right guard spot for two years and he wore a Texas Tech uniform and still has one year of eligibility with the Raiders. But tonight he will be guard or tackle for the North Texas A. & M. Aggies. Coach "Klepto" Holmes of the North Texas juggernaut claims that Reed is one of the best guards in service football. Reed was a standout the two years he played for Texas Tech, and on a visit to Tech last week he said he would definitely return to Tech and finish his year of eligibility. Reed is a Crosbyton High School product, and is something worth watching on the football field. 545 o BuildIn TERRY and CHILDRESS Hanna-Pope Company The Nome of Nationally Known alorehandisell 1111 Broadway I Featuring: Ready to Wear and Furnishings for the Entire Family CLEANERS VOGUE DYERS FURRIERS STORAGE Dial 2-2491 We Tackle Your Budget With Quality Foods at Thrift Prices Five Conveniently Located Stores in Lubbock Doing Our Part For The Tech RED RAIDERS If It Is Hardware 1209 College 904 MOM Street After the Game e avweete RUG Phone 9351 "The Students Store" 1331 College Avenue You Can Get It At POWERS Sporting Goods Golf, Tennis. Just as on the football field, it's teamwork that counts. There is one big difference. In football, you leave the winning to others. In war, you are as much a part of the teamwork needed for Vic- tory as pilots, bombardiers, tank crews, and foot soldiers. Early in the fall practice of the Red Raiders, Fullback Walter Schlinkman suffered a broken foot. Walter has been on crutches until last week when he put them aside and put a shoe on his right foot.
